Tattoo history

A short history of ink

From a man in the ice to a studio on Roman Bank: 7 moments, one engraving each. Folklore is labelled as folklore.

  1. 01 c. 3300 BC

    The Iceman’s 61 tattoos

Ötzi, found in the Alps in 1991, wears 61 tattoos: little bundles of lines and crosses rubbed in with charcoal, many over his joints. He’s among the oldest tattooed people ever found.

  2. 02 1769

    A new word comes home

Captain Cook’s Endeavour reached Tahiti, where Joseph Banks wrote about tatau. English took the word as “tattoo”, and sailors started coming home with ink of their own.

  3. 03 1862 & 1881

    Royal ink

The future Edward VII was tattooed in Jerusalem in 1862. His sons followed in Japan in 1881, where the future George V had a dragon put on his arm.

  4. 04 1891

    The electric machine

In New York, Samuel O’Reilly patented the first electric tattoo machine, adapted from Thomas Edison’s electric pen. Every buzz since owes him one.

  5. 05 Sailors’ flash

    Swallows and anchors

Folklore says a sailor earned a swallow for every 5,000 nautical miles, and an anchor for crossing the Atlantic. True or not, it filled a lot of forearms, and the designs are still on flash sheets today.

  6. 06 1969

    Eighteen and over

The Tattooing of Minors Act made it illegal in the UK to tattoo anyone under 18. It’s still the law, and it’s why we may ask for photo ID.

  7. 07 2026

    Tattoo Studio of the Year

And in Skegness: WG Tattoo Studio was named Tattoo Studio of the Year for the East Midlands at My Local Awards. The latest page in a very old book.

Tattooed art

Not just skin

We take on a limited number of tattooed commissions each year. Leather is tattooed by hand with needles, and canvases and pet portraits are drawn with a tattoo machine fitted with a biro cartridge. Each one is a true one-off. No prints, no shortcuts.

No. 02 5 available

Tattooed canvas, limited edition

Drawn by hand with a tattoo machine fitted with a biro cartridge: not printed, not painted. Finished under a protective varnish, and every canvas is slightly different.

No. 01 4 available

Tattooed leather accessory

Tattooed by hand with needles and specialist leather-safe inks, then sealed so it lasts while keeping the leather’s natural character. No two pieces are ever the same.

No. 03 Made to order

Custom tattooed pet portrait

Made to order from a photo of your pet, drawn onto canvas with a tattoo machine fitted with a biro cartridge, then sealed with a protective varnish so it lasts for years.

Commission a one-off

Have an idea for leather, canvas or a portrait of your pet? Tell us as much as you can. The more we know, the better we can judge it.

  1. We look at every request within 14 days.
  2. If we can take your commission on, we get in touch.
  3. Sending a request doesn’t guarantee we can take it on.
  4. Price, timings and details are agreed before any work starts.
  5. Nothing is confirmed until we’ve both agreed it.
  6. Tattooed work takes a long time, so we only take on a few.

Email us your idea, with any photos that help, and we'll get back to you.

Shipping
  • We currently ship within the UK only.
  • Most finished pieces ship within 14 days, depending on the work.
  • Commissions and made-to-order pieces can take longer; we confirm the timing when we accept yours.
Looking after leather
  • Keep it away from long spells of moisture.
  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
  • No harsh chemicals or cleaning products.
  • Leather ages naturally, and that adds character.
Looking after canvas
  • Keep it out of strong direct sunlight to protect the colour.
  • Never scrub it or use anything abrasive.
  • Dust lightly with a dry cloth.
  • It’s sealed to last, but handle it gently.

Every commission is an independent artistic creation. Designs inspired by existing themes aren’t affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to any brand or company.

Questions

Before you ask

Can I bring my own design?

Yes. Bring your own design, choose one of ours, or have your artist draw something just for you. Rough sketches and screenshots are fine.

How much will my tattoo cost?

Every piece is different, so your artist prices it from your idea. You'll get a fair, honest price before anything is booked.

How old do I need to be?

You must be 18 or over to be tattooed. That has been the law in the UK since the Tattooing of Minors Act 1969, so we may ask for photo ID.

Can I spread the cost of a big piece?

Yes, with our Savers Club. Put a little away each week or month and spend it with any artist when you're ready.

Do you sell gift cards?

Yes. Physical gift cards from £40 to £1,000. Choose an amount in the shop section and we'll sort the rest.
